Louisville, Colorado, November 30, 2005—Samsung Electronics has signed on to an agreement with CableLabs® for retail consumer electronics devices employing revolutionary Downloadable Conditional Access System (CAS) technology. Samsung is the first consumer electronics manufacturer to execute such an agreement.

Downloadable CAS offers a cost effective, cable company agnostic, solution for interactive, 2-way devices that connect to cable systems. Downloadable CAS allows the cable operator to download its own particular conditional access system of choice to devices connected to the cable network. Downloadable CAS is designed to operate with interactive cable set-top boxes as well as integrated DTVs and other retail devices that include a special chip. The Downloadable CAS Agreement is also available to any consumer electronics manufacturer on a nondiscriminatory basis.

“Signing the DCAS™ Agreement is part of Samsung's continuing commitment to innovation across our Consumer Electronics product portfolio. DCAS is an excellent solution for interactive devices. Samsung looks forward to continued collaboration with CableLabs and the cable industry to bring these cable-compatible products to market,” said Byung Youl Yu, EVP and General Manager at Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. “Samsung continues to be recognized as the premier Consumer Electronics partner for the North American cable industry. Moreover, we believe that signing the DCAS Agreement is a major step forward in our market strategy for both U.S. and Korea and represents a significant opportunity for Samsung to deploy advanced CE devices with the cable industry,” added Mr. Yu.

Dr. Richard R. Green, President and CEO of CableLabs added, “Samsung is truly a forward thinking company with a vision for partnering with the cable industry. We look forward to continuing to work with Samsung on Downloadable CAS and other innovations.”

“Samsung's pioneering work with Downloadable CAS demonstrates that it is a cost effective solution for retail as well as leased set tops. We look forward to continuing to work with Samsung on Downloadable CAS and other innovations,” said David Fellows, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Comcast Cable Communications.
